Jollay Orchards

It was a delightful day when the Tengelsen Family Scholars took a break from the city and visited Jollay Orchards in Michigan. After being welcomed by the Tengelsen’s as well as Big Shoulders staff and leaders, they were eager to join the hayride, which took them to all of the fun outdoor activities that the orchard had to offer! The Scholars started their day with apple picking and fishing at the fishing hole, both of which captivated everyone’s attention. After that, they continued to explore through a haunted church and a corn maze followed by homemade apple cider and apple cider donuts! Every scholar then picked out a pumpkin to bring home to their family.

As if this wasn’t enough adventure for one day, the kids next stop was the Tengelsen’s Farm and Frolic property for an incredible experience with the Sarett Nature Center's Wildlife Wonders program. The naturalists brought along various animal ambassadors and taxidermied mounts that taught everyone about animal adaptations, diet, and habitat of different midwest animals. The Scholars were also able to take part in some physical fitness activities as well as breath work to relax their nervous system, (all led by The Tengelsen Family Scholar’s very own mentor Cortez Cross along with “Tarzan Luke”!). For those who sought further thrill and excitement, tree-climbing was available along with several sports games such as football, volleyball and soccer.

The day ended with a special bonfire after dinner where everyone sat around, mingled as a bigger group and enjoyed s’mores under the stars! The group returned home feeling refreshed and recharged, having gained some valuable knowledge about nature and wildlife in Michigan. Check out some of the moments below!
