South Haven
The Tengelsen Foundation Scholars had a wonderful day trip to Michigan’s Maritime Museum in South Haven! They were shown around the museum's extensive collection of maritime artifacts, ranging from centuries-old ships to model boats and everything in between. The Scholars were able to learn about the history of navigation and see how ships have evolved over the years.
In the afternoon, their experience was enhanced with a Tall Ship historically immersive boat ride around Lake Michigan. From their vantage point of the lake, the students were able to witness firsthand what life on a boat was like by being active participants in the sailing process! After the boat ride came to an end, the Scholars visited a nearby park where they could unwind and enjoy some time outdoors. The Scholars ate some delicious barbeque and tried out activities like yoga and reiki work—both of which are said to be helpful in calming one's mind and body. This activity was led by our new friends Luke (a.k.a.”Tarzan” as named by the Scholars) and his partner, Adrienne, from The Collective out of Benton Harbor. They played some games on the bluff overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan before heading back home.
With memorable stories and deeper connections made during this second gathering, we have all certainly gained a more meaningful appreciation for nature and adventure!
